Paper 1 baseline assessment learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).
WWW: Abdul, some ability to analyse unseen printed advert. You demonstrate some knowledge of how Black Widow was marketed/promoted.
Next Steps:
a) Attempt each question in future exams.
b) Revise, you need to prepare better so you can attempt each question!
Mark: 16/42 Grade: 3
2) Look at the mark scheme for this assessment. For Question 2 (12 mark unseen) use the indicative content in the mark scheme to identify three points that you could have referred to in your answer.
• Athletic body connotes that the subject is in condition and well prepared for the‘battle’.
• No direct address but the subject’s eyes are focused on pushing the heavy tyre (physical exertion) which connotes determination and power in the face of adversity. This is reinforced by his facial expression which has his mouth open in a roar which connotes supremacy and effort.
• Dress code has connotations of strength since the trainers are engaged in the activity and the clothes are functional and appropriate for task so they connote success and durability. The make-up shows sweat and dirt which has connotations of being ready for action and taking part / effort.
3) For Question 3 (Galaxy - narrative features) use the mark scheme to write down the main narrative theories and how we can link them to the Galaxy advert CSP.
• The structure of the narrative: it follows a linear structure and features versions of iconic actors from the glamorous era of Hollywood (a CGI Audrey Hepburn and a lookalike for Gregory Peck) associated with sophistication and desirability.
• Character types can be seen as outdated stereotypes of masculinity and femininity (‘damsel in distress’ scenario) with Audrey Hepburn cast as the ‘heroine’ character type (Propp) with the male chauffeur coming to her aid as the ‘Hero’ archetype and rescuing her. However, another interpretation would see Hepburn as the ‘Hero’ of the narrative, taking matters into her own hands and forcing the driver of the car into the ‘Helper/Donor’ position, enabling her to complete her quest.
• The use of locations in the narrative suggests a version of reality for the audience: Italian Riviera has connotations of romance, upper class and the old Hollywood era is evoked, suggesting the luxurious nature of the chocolate and reinforcing the ‘silk, not cotton’ message.
4) Now look at Question 4 - Tatler and social/cultural contexts. Use the mark scheme to identify three points you could have made in your answer here.
5) On Section B, focus on Question 7 - film industry and Black Widow. Use the mark scheme to identify three ways Black Widow was marketed to its audience.
6) Finally, write down three things you are going to work on before your next mock exam in December (e.g. time management; revising CSPs etc.)
• Serif font for title connotes formality, high class and how well established the magazine is (Britain’s oldest magazine).
• Use of green colour scheme (fresh and new) with white text (style, class, sophistication).
• Recent cultural events referenced in cover lines – ‘See EU later’ references Brexit while ‘Love in the time of Corona’ reflects Covid pandemic. Suggests that wealthy British people want to know the latest news and current affairs.
5) On Section B, focus on Question 7 - film industry and Black Widow. Use the mark scheme to identify three ways Black Widow was marketed to its audience.
• The importance of the Marvel franchise and the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe
(MCU)
• The use of trailers, teasers and social media to build up excitement and word-of-mouth long before release.
• The use of traditional film marketing techniques: trailers, film posters, red-carpet premieres, interviews with stars and director etc.
6) Finally, write down three things you are going to work on before your next mock exam in December (e.g. time management; revising CSPs etc.)

Coursework Statement Of Intent
I am planning to produce a two paged magazine which will focus on a celebrity who recently launched their book about motivating and disciplining young minds who may currently be struggling with revising for exams, keeping a healthy diet, going to the gym to stay fit, struggling with a relationship, change in sleep schedule, keeping a healthy physical or mental health, reducing their screen time on their phone or praying to God in their everyday life. This book will help these young minds overcome these difficulties and potentially change their life.
The very first page of the magazine will contain features like a high-quality photograph of the celebrity as the central image and he will be showcasing his most recent published book about motivation and discipline. Following this promotion, I will include a cover line which will contain a text that will provide and mostly cover a brief introduction and an overview of the celebrity's book which will try and convince young minds to purchase and read it to improve their everyday lives. To do this, I will use a serif font for the headlines and multiple cover lines to give the celebrity's promotion magazine a more of a polished, worldly-wise and a civilized look.
The second page of my magazine will contain some more smaller original pictures of the celebrity and will cover topics such as "How advice about being consistent and disciplined from this book could change your life". I will use multiple camera shots of the celebrity to communicate meaning with the audience: Medium close up to exaggerate strong emotions which will help the reader's motivation to increase. Another camera should could be medium shot to show how inspiring and exciting it could get if the readers use the celebrity's advice. Most of the page will go over the celebrity's backstory and how you can avoid the mistakes he made in his life.
