Blog tracker and learner response

 1) List any tasks you have that are missing or incomplete.

  • October assessment LR
  • Demographics and Psychographics

2) Reflect on your tracker/feedback and write what you need to do this week to get your tracker all green or improve your work in GCSE Media.

For the 'October assessment LR' I need to finish off my last question which is Question 5 where I need to write a detailed paragraph on why charities use children in adverts in a stereotypical way. And also I need to finish off question 5 for the 'Demographics and Psychographics' task where I have to write what psychographic group or groups do I belong in, and after that I want to do the extension tasks where I have to write detailed sentences on the different types of psychographic groups..

3) Finally, come up with a list of three things you are going to do this half-term to help you make progress in Media.

  •  Write a detailed description of a word or write a detailed paragraph on a topic so that I fully understand what it is when I am revising or looking back at my book.
  • Highlight what is important in a description or paragraph so that I can get a summary of what it is when I look back at it.
  • Always make sure the tracker for my previous work is green when I am about to do my next blog task.

Demographics and Psychographics

 1) What information do media companies use to create a demographic profile of their audience?

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Education
  • Social class
  • Race/ethnicity
  • Job/profession/earnings
  • Location (city/village/countryside)

2) Why are media companies and advertisers increasingly using audience profiling and not just demographics?

Media companies use audience profiling to create a more detailed picture of their audience this is also because it is more accurate and up to date. Demographics sometimes can become outdated as the audience interest is not always the same.

3) What are the seven different Pychographic groups?
  • The aspirer
  • The explorer
  • The reformer
  • The succeeder
  • The resigned
  • The struggler
  • The mainstreamer

4) Write a brief summary of what each Psychographic group is seeking or motivated by.
  • The aspirer - They are happy to invest in luxury goods
  • The explorer - They are attached to new or innovative brands, products or experiences
  • The reformer - They are socially aware and want products that are good for them and the environment
  • The succeeder - They often choose the best brands and products for themselves based on reliability
  • The resigned - They are old people who have grown to trust and believe
  • The struggler - They see themselves to be attracted to junk food, alcohol or gambling
  • The mainstreamer - They enjoy tried and trusted brands that are value for money

5) What psychographic group or groups do YOU belong in? Think about your own interests and lifestyle and explain your decision. Remember, you may fit into two or three different groups!

I think I may belong in "The mainstreamer" group as I like trusted brands. This is because of the good reputation the brand may have due to its service or quality. Another group I may fit in is "The succeeder" this is because I like to choose what brand or product I like the most and what product that is the best for me. Last one could be " The struggler" as I do often eat a lot of junk food.

Extension tasks

This is a more detailed A Level explanation of the different Psychographic groups so revise the psychographic groups here.

  • The aspirer - Aspirers want status brands. They are happy to invest in luxury goods. They consider themselves stylish and on trend and may be persuaded by celebrity endorsements. They seek status

  • The explorer - Explorers like to discover new things. They are attracted to new or innovative brands,  products or experiences. They seek discovery.

  • The reformer - Reformers seek self-improvement. They are not influenced by status, and they are not  materialistic. They are socially aware and want products that are good for them and the environment. They seek enlightenment.

  • The succeeder - Succeeders believe they deserve the best. They often choose the best brands and  products for themselves based on reliability. They seek control.

  • The resigned - Resigned are predominantly older people who have built up their attitudes over a long period of time. They believe in institutions and traditions that they have grown to trust and believe. They seek to survive

  • The struggler - Strugglers do not think too much about the future. They may see themselves as  victims or be attracted to junk food, alcohol or gambling. They seek escape.

  • The mainstreamer - Mainstreamers are less likely to take risks. They make up 40% of the population. They enjoy tried and trusted brands that are value for money. They seek security.

Media assessment 1: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Some ability to apply connotations to the WaterAid advert. Able to explain why children are used in advertising.
EBI: Not always responding to the Q's being asked - highlight keywords in the Q to ensure you respond clearly/accurately
LR: See blog.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the mark you achieved for each question:

Q1: 0
Q2: 1
Q3: 2
Q4: 2
Q5: 2
Q6: 3

3) Identify one of your stronger questions. Why did you do better on this question? Use the mark scheme to help you with this.

The last question which is Q6 is the one I did the best response to as I fully understand why charities use children in adverts in a stereotypical way and I had worded it in the way I could.

4) Identify one of your weaker questions. Why did you score lower on this particular question? Use the mark scheme to help you with this.

In my opinion I think I did not do as well in Q5 as I am not able to phrase my sentence the way I was trying to, and I think I couldn't identify the keywords I was looking for to write it in my paragraph. Also, I think I could have done better in Q3 as I couldn't identify media and technical codes.

5) Finally, write a new, detailed paragraph for Question 3 - the unseen text 12 mark question. Use the mark scheme to identify anticipated content you can add to your response and make sure you refer to the text and write in detail.

Title (symbolic code) 'Heat' - Capital letters large, red font links to brand identity meaning the colour of the brand or the product. Highlighting emphasis high- key on her appearance contrasted to dimly lit use of low camera angle at Beyonce (non-verbal or technical codes) communicating that she's presented as powerful in the advertisement. The connotation of the women wearing a red dress also matches and links to the colour of the product which may communicate that this product is only suitable for women.

Extension tasks

Make sure all of your blog work is up-to-date - check your email for your latest tracker and post anything that is marked amber (unfinished) or red (missing). If you've completed all the initial tasks, look at the grade 8/9 extension tasks. These A Level-style activities will help you target the very highest grades.
