Magazines: Heat CSP

Introduction - Heat Media pack

1) Look at the Heat Media Pack. Go to page 2: the Heat mission. Write three things that Heat offers its readers under 'print'.

A)  Bring readers a truly unique, quality experience.
B)  Make sure readers spend their hard-earned pennies wisely.
C)  Helping readers navigate the tricky world of TV and streaming.

2) Now go to page 3 of the Media Pack - celebrity focus. What does the page say that Heat offers readers?

They ensure heat readers are always in the know and give them conversation-starters they can show off about to their mates. Their journalists have the answers to the questions 'before they’ve even been asked.'  They help celebrities to talk about their biggest secrets and we find the funny, wherever it’s hiding.

3) Now look at page 4 of the Heat Media Pack. What other content does Heat magazine offer its readers aside from celebrity news?
 
Heat offers life hacks for their audience based on lifestyle guide covers food, fitness, well being, travel and homes, all with an unique heat twist.

4) Look at page 5. What is Heat magazine's audience profile? Write all the key details of their audience here.

Media language

1) How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine?

The titles always contain "The MAGAZINE" and then the next line follows up with the topic of that page they are viewing to see if they may have their interests piqued

2) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover?

It mostly contains white, yellow and pink. Pink is stereotypically connoting a feminine colour meanwhile yellow and white is to grab the reader's attention to read that specific cover line.

3) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

A)  Shows images of more HEAT Magazines covers just in case if the audiences are interested in seeing more magazines.

B)  Shows images of celebrities to peak the interest of whoever follow them (Fans/followers)

C)  Shows what Heat offers their audience with a follow up image on that topic

4) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.


Tatler has more unique designs/topics for the wealthy

Heat designs are for suitable/affordable for everyone

Tatler users are more wealthy/stylish audience than Heats' audience

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.

2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

The topics that the magazine is covering is mostly presenting the celebrities in a negative way as it goes over things like 'IS THIS HARRY & MEGAN'S BIGGEST MISTAKE YET?' in capital letters. The images are also papparazi shots which ultimately presents them in a negative way.

3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.

Some presented negatively and some presented positively as the one with the advert is smiling towards the camera mean whilst the others are off guard taken pictures.

4) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class)

Tatler CSP case study.

Introduction - Tatler Media pack

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

‘‘TATLER IS A FABULOUSLY TARGETED, SENSATIONALLY ACCURATE RIFLE SHOT TO THE VERY RICHEST READERS IN THE COUNTRY. THESE PEOPLE LIVE THE LIFE REFLECTED ON OUR PAGES, BOTH PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL. AND BOY, DO THEY LOVE TO SHOP” T - The author explains what Tatler is and describes it in a very positive way

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website).
 List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

Average Age: 29

Female: 89%

ABC1: 90%

Average HHI: £261,572

It is mostly adults who are averagely aged 29 and are mostly a feminine audience. These people happen to be very wealthy as well.

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend

Tatler readers lover fashion as they have spent £843 Million on fashion as it was advertised in the magazines

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tatler?

Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

The connotations of the serif and the non serif could be that the serif fonts connotate that it is an old magazine and has quite a lot of history since its establishment. This means that it is more established and has been around for quite some time and it is still running as it has mostly wealthy audience

3) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

It shows and displays what they might be looking for or what they may be interested in for the magazine as it could be a relatable, interesting or topics of gossip.

4) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The connotation of the colour scheme can apply to the Union Jack flag which contains the colours of red, blue and white. This may show empatheticness towards the country as it faced a world war and has been brought down to ruins. These are also many eye catching vibrant colours that can appeal to the tatler audience.

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

Emma Weymouthas she wasthe first black Marchioness in British history. The socialite married into the aristocracy in Wiltshire, Longleat, in 2013 and became Viscountess Weymouth immediately after the lavish ceremony.

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

The cover lines suggests that the lifestyle of rick people in the UK like political gossips as this is shown in the lines 'SEE EU LATER'. They are also interested in fashion and beauty which are expensive.

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 

The type of people represented in the Tatler cover are wealthy people or the royal family as the queen is also mentioned in one of the cover lines

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

The stereotypes are being reinforced in this Tatler magazine as the women (Emma Weymouth) in the cover is wearing white and pinkish colours which are feminine stereotyped colours and she is also wearing make-up which connotes beauty for women.
